So you have a logo design already? Do you have an editable vector file of your logo? I always say its important for any business to have access to this. I have blogged about this before and how important it is and went into more detail about low resolution and high resolution files. You might not be able to open the vector file yourself (its usually created in an Adobe Illustrator program) but its so important to have this format for future use.
Recently I was approached by a local company who were having problems wanting their logo design put on a vehicle. The sign company couldn’t do it as they only had a very small png file so they wanted to know if I could help. The only way round this problem was to completely re-draw the logos again.
Lets look closer
On closer inspection of the original logo design below it looked like someone had done a very bad ‘trace’ of a stock image from a low resolution image. Chances are they never bought the rights to this image in the first place! I don’t know the background to this logo but this happens a lot. You must have the rights to use any imagery. You cannot just take it from google and use it for personal or commercial use. Especially when it is part of your brand! Cheap logo sites are notoriously full of so called ‘designers’ who borrow and steal! Yes you get a cheap logo for less than £50 but down the line I can guarantee you will have problems with that file.
Luckily I managed to source the correct stock image (it was available as a vector file thankfully to buy) and so after speaking to the client he agreed with what I was proposing to do.
Below is the before and after. You can see that the detail is back in the building now the correct vector image was used. This redraw now means this logo can be enlarged to any size with no loss of detail or quality.
Make sure you get the correct files!
Please make sure your designer gives you the correct files. Even if you are having a website built and they are ‘throwing’ in a logo design. You must have the vector files as you never know when you might need them. This is now the third re-draw I have done since December. Some logos are easier than others so if you have missing files and it means your print often looks blurry on business cards, posters or invoices you print then drop me an email.
